Top Holiday Strategies!

Top Holiday Strategies!

The holiday season is all about making memories with loved ones. As we celebrate we are surrounded by love, joy, and yes, food. Food is almost always part of any holiday celebration. Let’s face it, the holiday season is a tough time to eat cleanly and make good choices.

As wonderful as these traditions are, many of my clients struggle this time of year as well. Weight Gain, bloating, fatigue, and cravings just to name a few common issues they experience.

These simple tips will surely keep the cravings at bay and weight gain a memory of the past.

1. Eat Protein
2. Drink Water – most times we are just thirsty, rather than hungry
3. Plan your meals
4. Avoid deprivation
5. Distract yourself – cravings will pass if you wait it out a bit

What your body really needs is leafy greens, vegetables, plant-based protein sources, as well as healthy fats, in order to stabilize blood sugar, improve satiation, and banish cravings! That is why I’m sharing one my favourite Warm Winter Salads below that contains just these ingredients!

RECIPE

Warm Sweet Potato, Mushroom, and Spinach Salad

serves 2

1 large sweet potato (300g)
1 dozen mushrooms (400g)
1 cup of spinach
2 jalapeno peppers
1 dozen cherry tomatoes (160g)
apple cider vinegar
cinnamon
paprika
salt
olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cube sweet potatoes and place them on a baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil, salt, paprika, and cinnamon.  Bake for 40 minutes at 200C, until they are soft.

While they cook, slice the mushrooms into pieces and gently stir fry them with olive oil, salt, two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and the chopped jalapeño pepper (remember to discard the seeds before chopping). This should take about 7 minutes. Just before the end add the spinach and allow it to wilt. This is a very quick process, it will only take 2-3 minutes to become perfectly soft.

Slice the cherry tomatoes into quarters.

Once everything is cooking mix it all together and serve. Enjoy!
