Our first Netflix family movie night.. not quite what I expected!

Last month I was chosen to be on the Netflix stream team, where I basically get to do 2 things I enjoy (watching and writing) while bonding with my family and sharing my findings with you. Sounds good, right? Ever since, I had planned our first family movie night in my mind on numerous occasions.

For starters, we would definitely make use of all the awesome gifts we had received. My ten-year old daughter and I would wear our matching mother & daughter Netflix aprons and make popcorn, using our new popcorn bowls. Then we’d all (my husband included) sit together on the living room couch and snuggle up with our new blanket. Oh yeah, and we’d snack on those dates Netflix sent us, just in time for Ramadan.

Then I would have a couple of great shows lined up based on the latest recommendations, and everything would go smoothly. I’d even manage to take some awesome pics (that somehow would look as though they were professionally taken even though my phone camera doesn’t produce great results at all, especially indoors at night).

So the stage was set… for everything NOT to go as planned!

Reality is so often different from our expectations

The truth is that I had imagined the movie night so many times, but we were never actually having it.

So last Thursday I had came home, exhausted, after a long work week .. threw myself on the couch and just wanted to be a zombie. My daughter asked if I wanted us to watch something together. And that’s when I decided “Yes”, let’s just go for it. It doesn’t have to be planned and it doesn’t have to be perfect. Sometimes it pays off just to be spontaneous. And it did!

I suggested we watch Beat Bugs. My daughter didn’t seem thrilled with the idea and I realized that that’s probably because of the word Bugs in the title. We aren’t big fans of bugs. But I showed her a picture and said “they’re actually very cute”, so we agreed to give it a try. We started watching and we were both captivated in the first few seconds.

I was sold when I heard the opening song “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles. One: because it’s my favorite. Two: because we’re a family that loves music and singing. And three: because all you really need IS love. Imagine what the world would be like if everyone subscribed to that notion.

It turns out the entire show is built on the Beatles’ top hits (hence the “Beat” in the title I’m guessing). It basically follows the adventures of five friends (who happen to be friendly bugs) and the life lessons they learn.

There was no staging, no professional-looking pics and no popcorn. And I forgot the dates in the next room. But WE ENJOYED IT!

We decided that Chef’s Table would be next on our list of things to watch since we love cooking shows. So stay tuned for that. And we completed the evening with an also unplanned yet thoroughly enjoyable game of Monopoly in bed!

That’s all for now! I’ll be sure to fill you in again soon. Meanwhile, HAPPY RAMADAN to you all!
